Such a show would be special for anyone – but it’s especially memorable for children with autism.  Chicago Children’s Theatre returns with Red Kite Round Up, a one-of-a-kind theatrical experience tailored specifically to the needs and interests of children on the autism spectrum. To keep Red Kite Round Up intimate and focused – and to better tailor each show to the special needs of each child in attendance – the number of tickets sold for each adventure is limited to 10 children and accompanying adults for each of them, as well as 10 observers.

Years before “Dancing with the Stars” and “So You Think You Can Dance” turned ballroom dancing into must-see TV, one sizzling show was setting stages ablaze around the globe. The tour features “So You Think You Can Dance” alums Anya Garnis, Pasha Kovalev,  Ashleigh Di Lello, Ryan Di Lello, Robbie Kmetoni, Janette Manrara and Karen Hauer.  Also featured is Vonzell Solomon as the show’s female vocalist. Vonzell was the second runner-up in the 4th season of “American Idol.”

Friday, February 11 - Blues at the Crossroads: The Robert Johnson Centennial Concert

This multimedia celebration features Big Head Todd and the Monsters and blues stars David “Honeyboy” Edwards, Hubert Sumlin, Cedric Burnside, and Lightnin’ Malcolm. Guitarist and singer-songwriter Robert Johnson, “King of the Delta Blues,” is one of the most admired and influential figures in the genre, despite his short life—he died at age 27 in 1938—and the small number of recordings that he left. His life story is wrapped in mystery and legend, but his beloved songs, such as “Sweet Home Chicago,” “Come on in My Kitchen,” and “Crossroad Blues,” are truly timeless classics.

Paul Lewis embarks on an exploration of the complete solo piano repertoire of Schubert, spanning three seasons and five recitals at Symphony Center. He begins this unique journey in February with the Sonata in C Major, D. 840; Sonata in D Major, D. 850; and Three Piano Pieces, D. 946. His series of Schubert’s sonatas already presented throughout the United Kingdom, as well as on recordings, has earned rave reviews and prestigious awards. (For his second installment, in May, Lewis returns to perform Schubert’s 12 Waltzes, D. 145; Four Impromptus, D. 899; Hungarian Melody in B Minor, D. 817; and Sonata in G Major, D. 894.)

Applications are now being accepted for the 2011 Young Artists’ Competition at the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Sixteen finalists will be selected from the pool of applications received. The final round of the competition will be a live audition at Symphony Center on Friday, April 1, 2011.

The grand prize offers the winner an opportunity to perform on stage at Symphony Center. The winner also receives six tickets for family and friends to attend the June 7 CSO concert, professional photos of rehearsal and performance on stage at the concert, and a $100 Visa Gift Card.

The nation's largest and longest-running auto exposition showcases over 1,000 domestic and imported vehicles, auto-related exhibits, competition vehicles and project, antique and collector cars. There's plenty for little ones to see and do at the show. In the Jeep area is the Kids Test Track, where kids can try out their own pint-sized electric car. Hyundai also has a dedicated Kids Zone . Thursday, February 17 - Ingram Hill with Tom Fuller Band

Looking for Leaders is a program that introduces children and their caregivers to important historical figures, such as Dolly Madison, Teddy Roosevelt and Frederick Douglas, while giving them the opportunity to ask questions, hear about their achievements and get “autographs.” The program gives students a unique and memorable opportunity to take their learning beyond the classroom to discover more about historical figures and envision themselves as leaders in the future.

Thursday, February 24 through Sunday, April 10 - PostSecret Exhibition

Visit the premiere of PostSecret: Confessions on Life, Death and God, a visual arts exhibit featuring more than 270 artfully crafted postcards that unearth a myriad of private thoughts concerning spirituality and religion.  An opening reception for the public will be held on Thursday, February 24, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.  In November 2004, Frank Warren handed out 3,000 postcards to strangers in Washington, DC and invited them to write down their secrets on the card anonymously and mail it to him. Word spread and artful secrets started arriving from every continent.  This international phenomenon has spawned five New York Times bestselling books.

A great craft for the 6 and up crowd!

Materials:

  • Red construction paper
  • Paper doilies
  • Red and white felt
  • Tacky glue and glitter glue
  • Glittery heart-shaped stickers

 

Steps:

  • Fold a long sheet of construction paper like an accordion and cut out a heart shape with a tab on the fold side. (The tab is where the hearts will connect.)
  • Cut heart shapes out of the felt and glue them to the doilies.
  • Glue the doilies to the heart garland and decorate using the glitter glue and stickers. Allow to dry.

Cycle for Survival Raises $8 Million


for Rare Cancers

Now in its fifth year, Cycle for Survival is an indoor cycling fundraiser benefiting rare cancer research at MSKCC.  The event began in 2007 as a grassroots fundraiser founded by MSKCC patient Jennifer Goodman Linn, and has doubled in size each year, raising $8 million to date.

Hometown to co-founder David Linn, this is the second year the event has taken place in Chicago, and both the University of Chicago and Northwestern University have participated in clinical trials funded by Cycle for Survival.
