Billy Elliot Review

September 9, 2010

I've mentioned before that I'm a theatre lover, so I was super excited when Broadway in Chicago invited me to see Billy Elliot and then go to a post-show party with some of the cast last week.

I knew the basic story of Billy Elliot (boy discovers his love and talent for dance in a not-so-supportive environment) but I have never seen the movie, so I really went into the show not knowing what to expect.

One thing I did expect was some amazing dancing and that I got!  J.P. Viernes, the 14 year old who played Billy the night I was at the theatre (there are 4 Billy's), was so good.  It was hard to believe that he was just a kid.  His dancing was phenomenal and his personality, adorable!

I was also so impressed with Dillon Stevens who played Billy's best friend Michael.  I don't want to give anything away, so I'll just say the character of Michael marches to his own drummer.  Dillon played that role to the hilt with such energy and spunk that I laughed every time he stepped foot on stage!

The highlight of the show for me was seeing Emily Skinner in person!!  Playing Mrs. Wilkinson, the dance teacher who discovers and encourages Billy's talent, this Broadway alum was FLAWLESS!  Her voice, her acting, her character--you really can't take your eyes off of her when she's onstage.

While I did enjoy the show, at times I felt a little confused by it.  Was it a serious political piece (it takes place during the coal miners strike in the 80's in Britain) or was it a light, fluffy musical?  Sometimes the two didn't mesh well.  And honestly, I preferred the light, fluffy musical side better than the serious parts.

Despite the fact that there are a number of kids in this show I would not recommend it for younger audiences.  There is a LOT of adult language in it (which is funny and fitting for the piece, but you may not want your young-uns hearing it!) and the strike storyline is very dark at times.  However, it is a good history piece and a great commentary on being who you are no matter what anyone says, so your middle schoolers and up should really enjoy it.

Following the show I attended the party in the Phoenix Lounge at the Wit Hotel. I was lucky enough to spend a little time chatting with J. P. Viernes (Billy Elliot).  What an amazing kid!  I was already so impressed with his talent, but after talking with him and watching him mingle through a crowd of adults I was even more amazed.  He was so well-spoken and comfortable with a room full of people he didn't know.  I don't think we've seen the end of this guy; I'm excited to see what he does next!

All in all, it was such an exciting night with some good theatre and a fun party!  If you have teenagers, don't miss your chance to see Billy Elliot at the Ford Center/Oriental Theatre through January 15, 2011.

Disclosure: Broadway in Chicago provided me with 2 tickets to Billy Elliot, but as always all opinions are my own.
