When The Sound of Music National Tour made its stop in Chicago, the hills—and the hearts of local theatre fans—were alive with excitement. But for a group of 8th graders from St. Pius V School, the experience went far beyond simply watching the beloved classic on stage.
These students had the unique opportunity to sit down and interview some of the youngest cast members from the show—the talented actors who bring the Von Trapp children to life. With curiosity and confidence, the students asked thoughtful questions about life on tour, favorite songs, and what it’s like to balance schoolwork with performing in a national production.
Their favorite question? “What’s your favorite song from The Sound of Music?”—a moment that brought smiles, laughter, and some heartfelt answers from the young performers who sing those very tunes each night on stage.

The exchange was a joyful reminder of the power of the arts to inspire and connect. For the St. Pius V students, it offered a behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to bring one of Broadway’s most enduring musicals to life. For the cast, it was a chance to reflect on their shared love of performance and to inspire the next generation of dreamers.
The Sound of Music continues to capture audiences with its timeless story, unforgettable songs, and message of courage and hope—made even more special by moments like this, where the magic of theatre reaches beyond the stage and into the community.
