A simple DIY for all ages

Make beautiful homemade ornaments with just three ingredients—no salt required! Perfect for the winter holidays or to create cute garlands for holiday celebrations throughout the year.

3-Ingredient Cornstarch–Flour Dough (No Salt!)

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups baking soda
  • 1 cup cornstarch
  • 1 1/2 cups of cold water

Instructions:

  1. Combine: In a medium pot, whisk baking soda and cornstarch together. Add water and stir until smooth.
  2. Heat: Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens into a smooth, soft dough (similar to mashed potatoes). When the dough starts to pull away from the sides of the pan, remove from the burner. You should see the consistency start to thicken after 3-5 minutes.
  3. Cool: Remove from heat and let it cool slightly.
  4. Knead: Knead on a clean surface until silky and pliable.
  5. Create: Roll out to ¼ inch thick, cut with cookie cutters, poke a hole for hanging, and place on a parchment-lined baking sheet. If you plan on making a garland, then be sure to poke two holes side by side.
  6. Dry: Air-dry for 24–48 hours or bake at 275°F for 45 to 60 minutes until firm. Flip approximately every 15-20 minutes to prevent over cooking, edges browning or curling - even if you opt to air-dry the edges can curl up. You will notice that the holes may shrink as they dry so I recommend poking the hole as you flip them.
  7. Decorate: Paint, stamp, add glitter, or leave a natural, white, matte finish. Seal with Mod Podge or a glue & water mixture.

When the winter holidays roll around, few crafts feel as timeless (and kid-friendly!) as homemade ornaments. These simple, air-dry or bake-dry decorations are easy enough for little hands yet pretty enough to hang proudly on your tree, give as gifts, or string into festive garlands.

Most traditional dough ornament recipes rely on salt, but this dough delivers a smooth, bright white finish without any salt at all. The result? A soft, pliable dough that dries into beautifully clean, ceramic-like ornaments.

And the best part? You probably already have everything you need.

3 Ingredients. Endless Possibilities.
Here are some possible ways to display your keepsakes:

  • Hang on your Christmas tree
  • Tie onto gift packages
  • Create a mantel garland
  • Add names for personalized place settings
  • Paint white ornaments with cool blues and silvers for a snowy theme

Not Just for December — Make Garland for Any Holiday!

This dough is truly all-season friendly. Consider:

  • Valentine’s Day: Hearts stamped with lace
  • Easter: Pastel-painted eggs
  • Fourth of July: Stars strung with red, white, and blue ribbon
  • Halloween: Mini ghosts and pumpkins
  • Birthday banners: Letters to spell names

A simple strand of twine or ribbon turns these ornaments into charming garlands perfect for mantels, bookshelves, classroom décor, or party backdrops.

These ornaments are inexpensive, easy to execute, and full of memory-making potential. Make a batch on a snowy afternoon, host a family ornament-decorating night, or use this recipe for classroom, church, or community projects.

With just a little baking soda, cornstarch, and water, you can create meaningful keepsakes that brighten your home all year long.
