Fireworks Safety

By Sarah Bode June 29, 2011

Since I can remember, the Fourth of July has always been full of fireworks. From snakes, to roman candles, to yes, the BIG booms, our Fourth of July celebration started in the morning and still lingered long into July. No matter where we were celebrating (at home or away) we were all very aware and respectful of the dangers that fireworks present (which I think ensured our safety all those crazy years).

Here are some safety guidelines from the U.S. CPSC to keep in mind on Sunday and any other day you are dealing with fireworks:

  • Never allow children to play with or ignite fireworks
  • Read and follow all warnings and instructions
  • Be sure other people are out of range before lighting fireworks.
  • Only light fireworks on a smooth, flat surface away from the house, dry leaves, and flammable materials.
  • Never try to relight fireworks that have not fully functioned.
  • Keep a bucket of water in case of a malfunction or fire.

I would add two more off the top of my head to the list:

  • Never throw fireworks into an open fire-they may not have fully ignited and will once in the fire pit
  • Always wear shoes when lighting fireworks.

Fireworks are beautiful and have come to be a huge part of many families Fourth of July celebrations. We can all enjoy them as long as we keep a few key rules in mind!
