Prior to having my son I was one of those "my kid will never watch TV" people. Fast forward 2 years and I am now very aware that that is just not realistic for my family. So when my son does watch TV I like it to be something educational or a show that offers some kind of positive message.
Disney Junior to the rescue! With their newest show, Doc McStuffins, Disney Junior brings viewers an animated series that models good health, hygiene, compassion and nurturing for kids age 2 - 7. Doc McStuffins premieres on Friday, March 23, but Mac Kid Chicago and some guests got to take a little sneak peek this week and we liked what we saw!
Doc McStuffins features a little girl (Doc) who can talk to stuffed animals and toys and is able to help them when they are broken. As she cares for her toys, Doc teaches the audience important lessons about self-care and caring for others.
As a parent, I really liked all of the great lessons on the importance of taking care of yourself. One episode focuses on the need for enough sleep, another shows that going to the doctor is not scary. All good lessons for toddlers and up!
As a woman, I really love that Doc is a GIRL! Even in 2012, girls are still stereotyped a certain way in many shows and movies. I love that Doc is a strong, smart girl who may grow up to be a doctor someday just like her mom. Yep, mom's a doctor too. And dad? He stays at home with the kiddos and makes dinner! What a great message that you can be anything you want and that your gender doesn't have to determine who does what within a family!
As the mom to a boy, I love that the dad is the primary caregiver for his kids. My son loves his stuffed animals and even has a baby doll that he enjoys taking care of. As he gets older I don't want him to feel that he has to hide or stifle that nurturing side of himself. Shows with these kinds of role models are so important to our little ones as they start to figure out who they are and who they want to be.
Have kiddos in the 2 - 7 year old range? Then mark your calendar for this Friday, March 23, and don't miss Doc McStuffins!
