Performing Arts Can Create a Happy, Confident, and Well-Rounded Child

By Ashley Trumbo, Director of Music House, School of Performing Arts in Chicago, IL, sponsored January 19, 2017

We all strive to raise our children to be happy, creative, confident and educated. A good performing arts school will design their programs to meet these aspirations in an environment that is safe (physically and emotionally), inclusive and fun. Classes should encourage you and your child to discover and appreciate the artistic talents that we all have within us with opportunities to demonstrate this new talent. Group lessons, especially theater classes, require awareness of self and others. With an inclusive environment you understand and value your fellow thespian and learn that we are all more alike than most realize. The learning and education bring acquired in the class is almost disguised while enjoying themselves, making new friends, and developing poise and self-esteem. Fun in the process is required!

At Music House, we believe that all children should be exposed to the performing arts- music, dance, visual arts and theater. We have witnessed, and science has shown, that children who engage in performing arts classes improve their grades, improve their confidence, and are more ready to leave their comfort zone and take on new challenges. We believe and have seen how the arts are essential to raising a happy, confident, and well-rounded child. We are committed to inspiring young artists by encouraging every student to create, explore, and experiment. All children should have the opportunity to become happy, confident, contributing members of our world.

What we have witnessed first hand at Music House:

  • Performing arts help children learn the meaning of hard work and success and later develop more confidently, creatively, and courageously. For instance, a kindergartener who started violin lessons and was at the bottom of his kindergarten class and later at the bottom of violin class was ready to quit violin because he felt it was “too hard.” A Music House teacher encouraged his parents not to let him quit, so that he could learn an important life lesson- that not everything is easy! He enjoyed Tai Kwon Do, because he was good at it and didn’t have to work very hard to be good at it. Violin was a struggle and it took a lot of practice for him to succeed. Three years later, he is still playing violin! His parents are committed to his violin education because they have seen the positive effect his success, post struggle and hard work had on him.
  • Children overcome their fear of being on stage and walk away a more confident child. The feeling of being on stage is like no other. Some kids say that when they’re on stage they feel like their best self. Others say that when they’re on stage, they feel the most nervous but when they walk off, they feel like they have achieved something. We offer regular performing opportunities because we believe that children benefit greatly from on stage experience. Our next musical theater performance is Disney’s The Lion King Jr. Call 773-761- 3770 or register here!
  • Infants, toddlers, and preschoolers who take music classes are much more prepared for instrumental music education than those that do not take music classes before the age of 5 years old. See our Music Together, a fun, research based music class for 0-4 year olds, offerings here! First class is free.
  • Infants, toddlers, and preschoolers who see their parents engaging in the arts are more likely to stay engaged in performing arts classes and commit. By seeing their parents playing musical instruments at home (parents who “think” they are not musical, drum along on a kids drum or tambourine to music with your kids, this counts! Or dance with your kids in the living room to their favorite song! Or paint with them instead of just handing them a paint set and paper!) At Music House, we have music and dance classes that specifically incorporate parents - Music Together and creative movement for 3-5 year olds and parent and me dance classes for 0-2 year olds.
  • Performing Arts keep a child’s creativity alive because it creates an environment where they can freely express themselves without judgement!
