Crushing Hunger One Can at a Time

Gather Together as a Family to Help Other Local Families!

By Kristi Dalberg, Publisher of Macaroni Kid Downtown , South Kansas City, & Southeast Kansas City Macaroni Kid October 23, 2017

Every day, we turn on our TVs to see disaster. From devastating hurricanes to mass shootings, it's evident there's a lot of bad in the world. Our kids see these things and ask questions. It's hard to explain why these things happen and why we can't do anything to change it. However, there are lots of bad things we can change for the better, and many of these things often go unnoticed.

One of these tragedies is hunger. For example, did you know 1 in 8 people struggles with hunger in the United States today, which include nearly 13 million children? Today, 42.2 million Americans are food insecure. Hunger touches every community in the U.S. so no matter where you're at, you can make a difference. While our kids are being exposed to tragedies happening all over the country, we can stand together as a community and demonstrate love and kindness by helping crush hunger together.

So how can we Help Crush Hunger?

For any Red Gold canned tomato product purchased throughout the month of October, Red Gold will donate one meal to help families facing hunger. This year is Red Gold's 75th anniversary, and they've set a goal of donating 2 million meals to Feeding America’s network of food banks. A purchase of one can = one meal that is donated. Whether it’s labeled Red Gold, RedPack, Tuttorosso, or Huy Fong, simply buy a can, and feed a family. You can look for your local participating grocery or retailer store and how to get involved at www.helpcrushhunger.com.

For Red Gold, giving back to communities isn’t just the right thing to do – it’s part of their history. So, together, let's purchase Red Gold tomatoes and make dinner for our families. We can gather together at the table and talk to our kids about how kids are going hungry and why it's important we step up to help our fellow Americans. We can show our kids there is still good in the world, and that we can make a difference. By purchasing one can of tomatoes, you're changing the lives of a family.

According to a survey conducted by Red Gold, 100% of families have one or more of the most requested non-perishable food items from food banks in their pantry. While 100% of families have non-perishables that you would normally find in a food bank, nearly 70 percent aren’t sure what to donate to their local food bank.

Want to donate to a food bank? Donate non-perishables such as these items:

  • Cereal
  • Pasta
  • Canned fruits and vegetables
  • Rice
  • 100% fruit or vegetable juice
  • Peanut butter
  • Pasta sauce or spaghetti sauce
  • Box macaroni & cheese
  • Canned protein –tuna, chicken, turkey
  • Beans –canned or dry
  • Canned meals such as soups, chili, pasta
