REVIEW & GIVEAWAY: Bessie, Queen of the Sky

November 4, 2017

GIVEAWAY CLOSED: CONGRATS TO ALICIA!

My Mac Kid loves books and reading. He especially loves stories based on real people, so I was very excited to share Bessie, Queen of the Sky with him.

This fairy tale style book is inspired by the story of Bessie Coleman, the first black woman to hold a pilot's license in the world. When Bessie was growing up, no one could have imagined that a girl from a humble family would get out of the cotton fields and become a pilot! But with the help of her best friend Bloony, Bessie used her courage and determination to make her dream come true!

We both loved this book. It's written as a fairy tale, so it's a style my son recognized and enjoyed, but instead of the helpless princess waiting to be saved, it's all about a young girl who goes against the norms of the time to find her own happy ever after. As woman and people of color still struggle for equality, this book reminds us that anyone can pursue their dreams regardless of gender or race.

This book was written with the goal of inspiring young girls to break through gender stereotypes and to give girls new role models. However, my son thoroughly enjoyed the book and it sparked a conversation about what it means to have male privilege, how he can grow up to be the best man he can be and how important it is to see people for who they truly are and not what they look like. Because of that, I recommend this book to both boys and girls.

Bessie, Queen of the Sky can be purchased here. I also have a copy to give away to one lucky Macaroni Kid reader! Fill out this form to enter the giveaway.
