🎭 Bros Do Prose Brings New Life to Classic Peter Pan

An Interview with the Cast

By Macaroni Kid Chicago (Midtown) November 7, 2018

In this two-actor rendition, Bros do Prose brings new life to the classic tale of Peter Pan.  Wendy Darling, played by Ella Raymont, dreams of the magical island of Neverland and suddenly Peter Pan, portrayed by Breon Arzell, flies out of her dreams to take her on the adventure of a lifetime!  Bros do Prose is a theatre organization which creates timely, impactful and creative theatre & workshops for children in Chicago, New York, and Connecticut.  They have brought their whirlwind of creativity, physical feats and sick beats to the Mercury Theatre from November 3rd to December 23rd!  Click HERE to purchase tickets.

Macaroni Kid Chicago was honored to be able to interview the dynamic cast about Bros do Prose's Peter Pan!  This show is fun for all ages (recommended ages 6 and up, but there were some 4-year-olds who had a blast!) and audiences will enjoy the humor and ability to interact and dance along when the beat moves you!

Q) Who are the "Bros" and How Did You All Meet?

Ella: The Bros are me, Omen Sade and Christian Libonati. Omen and Christian met over a decade ago and have been working together for what seems like forever. I entered the picture a few years ago and we discovered how the three of us truly compliment each other's background and skill set in such a joyful and harmonious way.

Q) What inspired you to create Bros Do Prose?

Ella: Christian, Omen and I created BDP after putting together a 2 person version of The Adventures of Robin Hood. We realized that we have a unique presentation style and wanted to create more epic stories to share our love for storytelling and our love for creating empathetic experiences for all generations.

Q) From selecting a story to performing it for a live audience, how long is the process?

Ella: We started writing this show in October 2017. Since then we have had 2 development workshops in Chicago, 2 months of performance at the Summer Theater of New Canaan and a fall school tour. We've been doing rewrites the entire time. Mercury Theater has a shiny new version that we are excited to share!

Q) Peter Pan is a classic story and has been adapted for the theater many times. What makes your adaptation unique?

Ella: Well for starters: we only have 2 performers playing over 13 parts each! Throw in some intense fight choreography, hip hop dance, rap, rock ballads, puppetry and improvisation, and Viola! Bros do Prose Peter Pan!

Breon: This epic story is told and portrayed by only 2 actors. So, it is quite the feat. This form of storytelling and embodiment is something that you don't normally see. Also, this adaptation has much more girl power.

Q) What is your favorite line spoken by Wendy? Spoken by Peter?

Ella:  Wendy: "If you can strengthen that beautiful imagination of yours, then every day of your life will be an awfully big adventure"

Favorite joke: Smee: How can something so beautiful be so deadly? Hook: I often ask the mirror that same question, Smee.

Breon: Wendy: "if you can strengthen that beautiful imagination m of yours, then every day of your life will be an awfully big adventure."  Peter: "Stand down Mother-girl!"

Q) What other shows would you like to perform in the future?

Ella: As Bros do Prose, we have a few stories that we are working through adapting. I personally would love to see our version of Sherlock Holmes and Treasure Island.

Breon: Alice in Wonderland, King Arthur & Excalibur, Snow White & The Huntsman

Q) Why children's/family theater? What do you enjoy most about performing for a younger audience?

Ella: Part of our mission as the Bros is to inspire heroism through empathy. If we can foster an environment that allows families to walk away with emotionally intelligent conversation about other's life experiences and what it means to be a good person, then our job is done!

Breon: There is an energy and playfulness you don't get with older audiences. You're allowed to be as zany, and creative, and adventurous as you like. You create magic; an entire world that your audience is fully onboard with. It's so fun!
