Chicago is famous for its over-the-top St. Patrick’s Day celebration. But once you have kids, the experience can look a little different.
The good news? With a little planning, families can still enjoy some of Chicago’s most iconic traditions — including watching the Chicago River dyed bright green, catching a St. Patrick’s Day parade, and celebrating Irish heritage across the city.
Whether this is your first time seeing the river turn emerald or a family tradition you return to every year, here’s everything you need to know to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in Chicago in 2026.

๐ Chicago River Dyeing
Saturday, March 14, 2026
10:00 AM (arrive early)
One of the most famous St. Patrick’s Day traditions in the country happens right here in Chicago — when the Chicago River is dyed bright green.
And yes, I know what you’re thinking.
"Sara… isn't the river already green?"
Not like this.
Each year, boats release an environmentally friendly dye into the river, transforming it into a vibrant emerald color in about 45 minutes. The color sticks around for several hours, giving everyone plenty of time to snap photos and enjoy the spectacle.
Living just a few blocks from the river has made this one of my favorite Chicago traditions.
๐ Best places to watch the Chicago River dyeing
If you're bringing kids, these viewing spots tend to be easiest:
- Michigan Avenue Bridge
- Wacker Drive between Michigan and Columbus
- State Street Bridge
- Wabash Avenue Bridge
- Riverwalk viewing areas
Crowds will be heavy and driving downtown is not recommended, so public transportation is definitely your friend.
I like to start the day early because the vibe shifts a bit more toward the 21+ crowd by the afternoon, but the river dyeing itself is absolutely worth seeing with kids.
๐ Chicago St. Patrick’s Day Parade (Downtown)
Saturday, March 14, 2026
12:30 PM
After the river turns green, the celebration continues with the Chicago St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Grant Park.
The parade begins at Balbo Drive and Columbus Drive and travels north toward Monroe Street.
Expect:
- Irish dancers
- Pipe and drum bands
- Floats and community groups
- Plenty of green everywhere you look
If you’re already downtown for the river dyeing, it’s easy to stick around and catch the parade.
Just keep in mind that the surrounding neighborhoods, especially River North, tend to become more of a party scene as the afternoon goes on, so earlier in the day is usually best for families.
๐ South Side Irish Parade
Sunday, March 15, 2026
12:00 PM
The South Side Irish Parade is always held on Sunday and has become one of the most beloved neighborhood celebrations in Chicago.
The parade begins at 103rd Street and Western Avenue and travels south to 115th Street through Beverly and Morgan Park.
In recent years, organizers have intentionally brought the parade back to its family-friendly roots, with a no-alcohol policy along the route.
With nearly 100 parade entries, you’ll see:
- Irish music
- Pipe bands
- Irish dancers
- Community groups
- Local organizations
This parade has a much more neighborhood feel and can be easier to enjoy with kids than the downtown crowds.
๐ Northwest Side Irish Parade
Sunday, March 15, 2026
12:00 PM
Another great neighborhood celebration takes place on Chicago’s Northwest Side.
The parade begins near Neola Avenue and Raven Street and travels along Northwest Highway toward Harlem Avenue.
The focus here is on faith, family, and Irish heritage, making it another great option for families looking for a festive but slightly less crowded St. Patrick’s Day experience.
๐ป St. Patrick’s Day Events Just for Adults

Yes! Families often enjoy the river dyeing, the downtown parade, and the South Side Irish Parade - What’s the best way to get downtown for the Chicago River dyeing and parade?
Public transportation is your best bet. The CTA “L” and Metra trains make it easy to get into the downtown/Loop area without dealing with road closures or heavy traffic. If you plan to attend the South Side Irish Parade, the Metra Rock Island line can also take you from downtown to Beverly. - Should I bring a stroller to the St. Patrick’s Day celebrations?
If you’re bringing little ones, try to travel light. Large strollers can be difficult to maneuver through the crowds near the river and parade routes. A smaller stroller or baby carrier will make navigating the busy streets much easier. - What should we wear to St. Patrick’s Day events in Chicago?
Dress in layers. Mother Nature can be a fickle friend in Chicago in March. Rain, snow, wind, sunshine, are all possible in the same day. - Should we bring food or plan to eat at restaurants downtown?
It’s always smart to bring snacks, especially with kids. Restaurants fill up quickly during St. Patrick’s Day celebrations and you may still have to wait for a table even with a reservation. - Do we really have to wear green?
Technically no… but you’ll probably hear about it if you don’t. Wearing green is part of the fun and helps everyone feel part of the celebration. Plus, it can get a little exhausting having strangers point out that you forgot!
Don't worry - you do not have to spend the entire day decorating Leprechaun traps, or going through a lot of green food coloring to make magical Leprechaun milk or pudding - Unless you want to and if so we have the ideas here for you!
