Tips for Extreme Heat

July 19, 2019

Mother Nature has responded to Chicago's complaints about the extreme cold this past January by serving up some extreme heat this weekend!  With temperatures in the 90's and a "feels like" predicted to be in the 100's here are some tips for staying safe:

  • Avoid strenuous activity, especially during the hottest times of the day which are expected to peak in the afternoon
  • Plan your outings accordingly - the early morning will be the coolest and be sure to call ahead to make sure events are still scheduled to take place as planned
  • Take frequent breaks and drink plenty of water throughout the day
  • Wear clothing that is lightweight and loose-fitting
  • Be careful when in the car - don't leave pets or kids in cars because temps can get dangerous quickly in these conditions and roads can buckle in this excessive heat
  • Keep an eye out for those most at risk for heatstroke - pets, elderly, the ill and homeless may need help in these conditions.  Take a look at where the closest cooling stations are in your neighborhood in case someone needs to know.  Libraries, Park District Field House, Pools, Police and Fire Stations are ready to help people cool down if needed.

Be safe and embrace the A/C!  It will be a great day for a visit to the pool, local splash pad or museums, or even just a great afternoon for crafts, board games and an indoor picnic!
