Our Favorite Chocolate Chip Cookies

Celebrate National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day!

By Sara Yaniga, Macaroni Kid Chicago (Midtown) July 25, 2019

If we are going to recognize August 4th as National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day then the only proper way to celebrate it is with a delicious, homemade cookie (or two) and a glass of milk!  I have claimed the following recipe as my own for nearly 20 years, but in fact, I learned it from a friend when I was a college student in Columbus, Ohio.  Susan had adapted the recipe over the years and I think it has reached perfection and needs to be shared!

INGREDIENTS
  • 2 3/8 cups of flour
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons of baking soda
  • 1 1/8 cups sugar
  • 1 1/8 cups brown sugar
  • 1 cup of butter, softened
  • 2 teaspoons of butter-flavored Crisco
  • 2 teaspoons of vanilla
  • 2 eggs
  • chocolate chips
  • chopped walnuts or pecans (optional)
  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees
  2. Spray cookie sheet with non-stick spray, or line with parchment paper
  3. Combine flour and baking soda and set aside
  4. Whip sugars, butter and Crisco until they change consistency
  5. Add vanilla and eggs and whip until consistency changes again.
  6. Mix in flour & baking soda mixture slowly until well blended
  7. Add as many chocolate chips (and chopped nuts) as you like!
  8. Drop spoonfuls of dough onto a prepared cookie sheet and bake 8-10 minutes or until slightly brown.  (Leave a little longer if you like crispier cookies)
  9. Let sit for a few minutes before removing from the cookie sheet and placing on a cooling rack
