GIVEAWAY for National Girls & Women in Sports Week

By Sara Yaniga, Macaroni Kid Chicago (Midtown) February 1, 2021

Growing up I didn't discover organized sports until 7th grade, when a local parent who was instrumental in bringing the sport of lacrosse to our town in the 70's developed a program for middle school girls.  From that first practice in the fields behind the library I began to realize that sports teach us more than the rules of a game.

I learned how to make new friends, work together as a team and how to strengthen my body and mind. Lessons in sportsmanship - how to win, and lose, with respect to yourself, your team and your opponent - are lessons that I have carried through at home and work.  I learned how to respect others, let others lead and try new things, even when they seem hard or scary.  I built up my own confidence and found my own voice and identity.  30 years later, despite all going on our own paths after middle and high school, I am still connected to many of the girls and coaches who first met on that field in 1990.

When I became a mother for the first time it felt natural that we would encourage our son to play sports, but it wasn't until our daughter was born that it became almost a mission to me to expose her to as many physical activities and organized sports as possible, hoping that she will one day find something that gives her the same experiences I had.  My only wish is that she finds her niche earlier than I did, so she can begin building those skills and lessons before the awkward tween years are upon her.

February 3 marks the 35th year of National Girls & Women in Sports day which is a national day of observance recognizing the importance of equal opportunities in sport for girls and women. Powered by Women's Sport Foundation, this annual day of celebration and advocacy inspires girls and women to play and be active, to help realize their limitless potential. Now more than ever, with the ongoing challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, social justice movement and political tumult, staying mentally and physically healthy and resilient, is vital.  In Chicago, young girls between the ages of 8 and 14 are invited to participate in a Girl's Day of Play, hosted by the Chicago Park District and other events can be found in communities all across the country.

To recognize this day Macaroni Kid Chicago has partnered with Chicago's own Makoshey, a brand of clothing celebrating and honoring all girls and what makes them truly unique, with a giveaway worthy of any young female athlete!  One winner will be randomly selected to win a gift which includes a Makoshey tote bag and shirt, plus items to continue to encourage and inspire one young athlete.  This giveaway is sponsored by Makoshey and Macaroni Kid Chicago and runs from February 1st to February 7th, with the winner being announced on Monday, February 8th.
