15 Ways to Celebrate the Last Day of School

By Sara Yaniga May 20, 2023

As a parent, witnessing the joy and excitement on my children's faces as they celebrate the last day of school is truly heartwarming. The air is filled with a sense of accomplishment and freedom, as the weight of homework and exams lifts off their shoulders. There's an undeniable buzz of anticipation as they eagerly plan their summer adventures and dream of endless days of play and exploration. It's a time to reflect on their growth throughout the school year and celebrate their achievements, both big and small. From the enthusiastic chatter with friends to the laughter that fills the playground, every moment is brimming with happiness and a sense of togetherness. Watching them let loose and embrace the carefree spirit of summer fills me with immense joy, reminding me of the fleeting nature of childhood and the importance of cherishing these precious moments.

Here are 15 ways to celebrate the first day of summer with your children:

  1. Snap the photo! I am a sucker for those First/Last Day of School pictures and I LOVE comparing them to one another! Here is a free sign you can print and color at home.
  2. Plan an outing to a favorite park, beach, or outdoor destination for a day of relaxation and fun.
  3. Plan a special family dinner (our personal tradition has always been pizza)!
  4. Go on a Scavenger Hunt together!
  5. Have a cozy movie night at home, complete with popcorn and cozy blankets.
  6. Go out for a special treat, such as ice cream, frozen yogurt, or a favorite dessert.
  7. Sign up for a fun Summer Camp where your kids can meet new friends, learn new skills and have fun.
  8. Have a game night where the whole family can play board games, card games, or video games together.
  9. Gather up your fellow parents and create a Cheer Station complete with signs, bubbles, music, and noisemakers and let loose when those kids walk out of the school on the last day.
  10. Write a letter to your children, reflecting on the highlights and accomplishments of the school year. Let them read it, but save it for them to reflect back on over the years.
  11. Plan a backyard or indoor camping adventure, complete with tents, a bonfire, and stargazing.
  12. Have a dance party, where everyone can let loose and celebrate through music and dance.
  13. Create a Summer Bucket List, or you can use THIS ONE if you need some inspiration
  14. Take a day to simply relax and unwind at home, allowing each family member to pursue their favorite hobbies or activities.
  15. Plan a Road Trip somewhere new, or somewhere you love going

Remember, the key is to spend quality time together, enjoying each other's company and creating lasting memories. Choose activities that suit your family's interests and preferences, and celebrate the achievements of the school year in a way that brings joy and togetherness.
