Donut Day is just around the corner, and what better way to celebrate than by indulging in the divine delectable donuts offered by Chicago's locally-owned donut shops?
Join us on a delightful donut journey through Chicago!
Beacon Doughnuts
In the Alley - 810 W Armitage Ave (Lincoln Park)
Normally I wouldn't encourage anyone to eat food found in an alley, but Beacon Doughnuts is the exception! Their doughnuts are made in small batches daily and once they are sold out they are closed for the day. Don't worry, if there is a flavor you really want, you can preorder up to 3 days in advance. Coffee lovers - Beacon's cold brew is also one of the best around, especially on a hot summer morning.
Firecakes Donuts
River North, Lincoln Park, North Ave and TimeOut Market PLUS "Billy" their truck
When I first moved to Chicago our apartment was positioned right between two donut shops. One has since closed while Firecakes has done nothing but grown - and if you have ever had their Wildflower Honey Glazed or Mexican Hot Chocolate creations you would understand why. Firecakes also makes some delicious homemade ice cream which when sandwiched between donuts makes a mind-melting sweet treat.
Do-Rite Donuts & Chicken
Streeterville, West Loop, Willis Tower, Wrigleyville & Water Tower Place
This little gem was discovered by a very pregnant me after a check up with my doctor. More than just delicious, small batch donuts Do-Rite is home to one of the very best breakfast sandwiches in town! Plus they serve up Dark Matter Coffee and will even let you swap your sandwich's brioche bun for a donut
Doughnut Vault
401 N Franklin Street (River North)
If you are taking an early morning stroll around River North and see a line forming in front of a tiny store front then I suggest you follow suit! This teeny store front is home to some of the most beloved donuts in the Windy City - whether you prefer cake, yeast or old fashioned treats - they have them here. Well, until they don't. Doughnuts fly out of this place and once upon a time it was possible to leave the Vault empty-handed or without your favorite flavor, but now you can actually order online for pickup or delivery and avoid that sad feeling.
Stan's Donuts & Coffee
16+ Chicago locations
It's nearly impossible to come to Chicago and NOT come across a Stan's Donuts in your search for a donut and coffee. Since arriving to the scene in 2014 this whimsical donut shop has continued to grow -even popping up in our local grocery stores. In the summertime our family loves to stop at the Millennium Park location to grab a little sugar and caffeine boost before a day of playing.
Downstate Donuts
1132 W Wilson Ave (Uptown)
This new spot is a welcomed addition to the donut offerings in Chicago. What I knew as a "spudnut" when younger, DSD uses potato instead of the more commonly used flour in their ingredients and the result is a light and fluffy treat. Don't hesitate - if you make it to their shop, or come across one of their Donut Trikes - give one a try (but buy extras because it's nice to share!)
Is anyone's stomach growling yet? Just me?
Support our Chicago-owned donut shops on Donut Day — they not only will fill that "hole" you've had in your stomach, but you can also feel good about supporting the local businesses that make Chicago so special.
