Pride Month in Chicago

By Sara Yaniga, Macaroni KID Chicago June 3, 2023

Pride Month, observed annually in June, is a time of celebration, recognition, and support for the LGBTQ+ community. It presents a valuable opportunity to teach children, and each other, about diversity, inclusivity, and acceptance. By fostering an understanding of Pride Month, we can play an integral role in cultivating a generation of compassionate and open-minded individuals. Here are some key approaches to effectively teach kids about Pride Month and its significance.

Emphasize Equality and Acceptance:Teach children about the importance of treating everyone with kindness, respect, and equality. Explain that all individuals, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity, should be valued and celebrated for who they are. Encourage empathy by discussing the challenges faced by LGBTQ+ individuals and the importance of standing up against discrimination and prejudice.

Share Stories and Literature: Introduce children to diverse stories and literature that highlight LGBTQ+ characters and themes. These stories can provide valuable insights, promote empathy, and help children develop a broader understanding of different perspectives. Look for age-appropriate books that explore themes of identity, love, acceptance, and celebrating differences.

Attend Pride Events: Participating in local Pride events or parades can be a powerful way for children to witness and celebrate the vibrant LGBTQ+ community. Explain the significance of these events as spaces of inclusivity, where people come together to show support, love, and acceptance. Engage children in creating rainbow-themed crafts or banners to display during the event, fostering their sense of involvement and pride.

Encourage Questions and Dialogue: Create an atmosphere where children feel comfortable asking questions and expressing their thoughts and feelings. Encourage open dialogue at home and in educational settings, promoting a safe space for children to explore topics related to identity and sexual orientation. Be open to learning alongside them, acknowledging that you may not have all the answers, but that together you can seek understanding.

Practice Inclusion and Allyship:Teach children the importance of being inclusive and supportive allies to their LGBTQ+ peers. Emphasize the significance of standing up against bullying and discrimination in any form. Encourage children to be kind, accepting, and inclusive in their words and actions, promoting a positive and inclusive environment for all.

Teaching kids about Pride Month is an opportunity to instill values of acceptance, equality, and empathy. By fostering conversations, exploring literature, attending events, and practicing inclusion, we can raise a generation that celebrates diversity and understands the importance of respecting and valuing every individual, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. Together, let us build a world where love, acceptance, and equality flourish for everyone.
