By Julia Mahowalld, JAM Teaching & Consulting July 15, 2023

Throughout the summer season, it's the perfect time to embark on exciting reading adventures with your child! Summer provides a wonderful opportunity to foster a love of reading and support your child's reading development in enjoyable and engaging ways. Check out these tips and tricks to make reading a cherished part of your family's summer activities!

Create a Reading Routine: Establish a consistent reading routine by setting aside dedicated time each day for reading. Whether it's in the morning, before bed, or during a cozy afternoon break, make reading a cherished habit that your child looks forward to.

Visit the Local Library: Take advantage of your local library's summer reading programs. These programs often provide incentives, such as reading challenges or rewards, that can motivate and encourage your child to explore a wide range of books. Libraries also offer a wealth of resources and knowledgeable librarians who can help you and your child discover new and exciting reads.

Engage in Shared Reading: Shared reading is a powerful tool for bonding and developing reading skills. Take turns reading aloud, discussing characters, and predicting what might happen next. It's a great opportunity to model expressive reading and emphasize the joy of storytelling.

Connect Books to Real-World Experiences: Help your child make connections between stories they read and their own experiences. Encourage them to relate characters or events to their own lives, discuss their opinions, and ask questions. This connection will deepen their understanding and make reading a more meaningful experience. If you're going on a trip, check out some books about the place you are traveling to! Create a Reading Nook: Designates a cozy and inviting reading nook at home. It could be a comfortable corner with pillows, a bean bag chair, or a special reading tent. A dedicated space for reading will make the experience more enjoyable and enticing for your child.

Embrace Audiobooks: Audiobooks are a fantastic way to engage reluctant readers or to enjoy stories on long car rides or during quiet downtime. Let your child listen to audiobooks while following along with the physical book to enhance their listening and reading skills simultaneously.

Remember, the goal is to make reading a fun and enjoyable experience for your child. Embrace their individual reading preferences, celebrate their progress, and foster a lifelong love for books.

Wishing you a summer filled with library adventures!
