By Sara Yaniga, Macaroni KID Chicago October 7, 2023

While popcorn is a classic companion for those family movie nights and adventures to zoos and amusement parks, its potential extends far beyond the confines of a simple snack. In honor of National Popcorn Popping Month, we have compiled a list of creative and unexpected ways you can make use of those fluffy, popped kernels. From crafting and decorations to science experiments, join us on a journey that proves that popcorn is more than just a tasty treat!

Popcorn Decorations:

String stale popcorn together to make garlands or wreaths for holiday decorations using a needle and fishing line. You can spray with a clear coat of shellac to help preserve for years to come.

Use popcorn kernels in a bowl or glass to hold a candle

Popcorn Crafts:

Use popcorn kernels as a craft material to make mosaics and collages.

Thread popcorn onto string to make edible necklaces for kids.

Fill containers of varying sizes with popcorn to create homemade maracas or shakers.

Popcorn Science Experiments:

Use popcorn to demonstrate concepts like buoyancy and density in water.

Experiment with popping kernels at different temperatures and record observations.

Rub a balloon on your hair or carpet and then hold it near a bowl of popcorn to see what happens.

Popcorn Filling:

Use popcorn kernels as a filler for simple sewing projects like stuffed animals, pillows, or bean bags.

Use popcorn kernels for sorting activities or in sensory bins for tactile exploration.

Use popcorn kernels and an old sock to make a DIY "Boo Boo Bunny", which can be used as a hot or cold pack

Popcorn in Bird Feeders:

Make bird feeders by coating popcorn with peanut butter or suet, then hanging them for the birds to enjoy.

Popcorn in Potpourri:

Scent popcorn with essential oils and add it to potpourri for a unique aroma.

Popcorn Ball Sculptures:

Mold popcorn balls (similar to Rice Krispie treats) into shapes and create tasty treats for friends or sculptures or tabletop decorations.

Popcorn Math Activities:

Use popcorn as a manipulative tool for yummy math lessons. Subtraction is my favorite 😂

Popcorn Firestarter:

Coated in wax, popcorn can serve as a firestarter for campfires or fireplaces.

Popcorn in Planting:

To reduce soil volume, use popped popcorn as a lightweight filler in the bottom of large plant pots.

Remember that while these creative uses for popcorn can be fun and inventive, make sure to use caution and consider hygiene and safety when working with food items in non-traditional ways.
