What's the Big Dill about SPF Chicago?

Step into the Pickleball Playground in Lincoln Park

January 5, 2025

Over the past several months, our family has become familiar with a new business in Chicago's Lincoln Park neighborhood: SPF Chicago—short for Social Play Fun. If you’re even mildly aware of current trends, you’ve probably heard about pickleball, which has been taking the country by storm. SPF Chicago has embraced this phenomenon, but it’s so much more than just a pickleball hotspot.

SPF Chicago is positioning itself as a true community center, offering an impressive range of activities and amenities for people of all ages. Here’s a glimpse into what makes this place such a gem:

1. Summer Camps for Kids: Parents, rejoice! SPF Chicago hosts engaging summer camps where kids can learn new skills, stay active, and make friends in a safe and fun environment. It’s a great solution for keeping young ones busy while school is out. This was our first interaction with SPF and we were hooked rather quickly. Initially, just our youngest was signed up for camp, but her big brother decided to join last minute and they both loved it for different reasons. I could write an entire artcle dedicated just to our summer camp experience but the short version is that the people who run SPF and the camp were lovely and there was enough variety of activity that there was something for everyone.

2. Play for All Levels: SPF Chicago's open play sessions cater to everyone whether you’re a seasoned pickleball pro or a curious beginner. It’s the perfect opportunity to learn, practice, or simply enjoy a game with friends. It is pretty easy to search online to find an Open Play session or to reserve a court for your own family/group.

3. Event Space and Birthday Parties: Looking for a unique venue to celebrate a special occasion? SPF Chicago has you covered. Their event space is versatile and family-friendly, making it ideal for everything from milestone birthdays to corporate gatherings.

4. Multi-Ball Game Room and Bocce Ball: If pickleball isn’t your thing, no problem. SPF Chicago also features a multi-ball game room and bocce ball courts, offering plenty of options for fun and friendly competition.

5. Cafe and Cocktails: After all that activity, refuel at their on-site cafe or unwind with a cocktail. The relaxed atmosphere is perfect for catching up with friends or enjoying some downtime.

6. Membership has it's perks! You do not have to be a member to take advantage of fun times at SPF, but there are definitely some added benefits - like free paddle rentals, discounts on reservations, food & beverages, special "member only" events and access to well-appointed locker rooms and saunas for members (and their guests).
A bonus is that memberships do not have to be for a full 12-month cycle, the minimum is a 2 month period.

What makes SPF Chicago truly special is its ability to bring people together. It’s not just a place to play sports; it’s a hub for community connection and shared experiences. Whether you’re attending a camp, hosting a party, or just dropping by for a quick game, you’ll find a welcoming and vibrant space that fosters camaraderie.

In a bustling city like Chicago, having a spot like SPF Chicago in the heart of Lincoln Park is a real treasure. If you haven’t checked it out yet, it’s time to grab your paddle, gather some friends, and experience everything this incredible venue has to offer.
