Snowman Snow Stick

How Does The Snowfall Measure Up?

By Sara Yaniga, MacaroniKID Chicago January 28, 2023

Snowy days call for a mixture of outdoor and indoor activities and this is one craft that embraces BOTH!

Gather your supplies:

  • Paint Stir Stick or Ruler for the base (or anything you can find that is flat & sturdy enough to brave the elements)
  • White, or light color, paint for the base
  • Foam sheets* in various colors to make elements like the face, hat and nose
  • Permanent or Paint Markers for your lines of measurement and numbers
  • Pipe cleaner for arms
  • Ribbon or Yarn for a scarf

And as most of my DIY projects are - we make them up as you go, so this list is merely to guide you, not an "absolute" on what is needed.  If you do not have sheets of foam on hand, you can use paper, just be sure to give it a layer of protection from the elements by covering it in packing tape.

  1. Paint your base a solid color and let dry
  2. Cut out hat and nose from foam craft sheet
  3. Draw straight lines, about 1/2 the width of your base, in even increments using a permanent or paint marker.  The final number of lines could vary depending on what you used for your base.
  4. Using different colors, write out the numbers starting with 1 and the bottom and working your way UP the Snow Stick.
  5. Give your snowman a face using permanent markers and glue down any accessories you created.
  6. Twist a pipe cleaner around the "neck" area for arms and use the ribbon to make a scarf.

Now you are ready to find a home for your Snowman Snow Stick and see how Chicago's next snowfall measures up!
