What do owl pellets, CT scans, and ancient Egypt have in common? Come to the museum for a hands-on family program to find out, and to see a live hawk up close. Discover where these birds live in the Chicago area and why they are important to our ecology while learning about how raptors, like the falcon, were important to ancient Egyptian culture. Investigate the life of an owl by dissecting and analyzing owl pellets using the same scientific analysis and techniques that archaeologists use to learn about ancient Egypt. You will also learn how high-tech medicine has helped the Oriental Institute’s researchers understand more about birds in ancient Egypt.

The Silent Language is an adaptation of an old Serbian folk tale originally called Nemusti Jezik.  It follows the journey of a young village servant named Poor Gasho as he gains the ability to understand the “the silent language.”   As defined in this story, it is the language that only animals can speak and understand.  On a larger scale, the script also speaks to the things we see and hear in everyday life, but fail to recognize due to our inabilities to listen and focus on details.

BenFest is an annual north side family-friendly event that has newly expanded into three days, and highlights a large menu of great food and refreshments, beer selections, live music for adults and children, and quality family entertainment. The festival has also expanded out onto the street, and the all new market-place on Leavitt includes local vendors and merchants of art, jewelry, clothing, gifts, crafts and games. The renowned children’s area features live music and dance for various ages, games, water slide, costumed characters, inflatables, face-painting, arts and craft area, train rides and more – you must see it to believe it!
