Theatre Review: 1-2-3 Imagine! with Elmo & Friends

May 12, 2011

This morning I dressed my son in his Elmo t-shirt, grabbed one of his Elmo dolls and headed out to the Rosemont Theater to see Sesame Street Live's production of 1-2-3 Imagine! with Elmo & Friends

What a treat! From the moment the show started my little guy was THRILLED!  He clapped, he squealed, he waved, he danced. It was a good day!

The magical journey begins as Sesame Street’s mail carrier, Sam, stops by to deliver special postcards from far-away places. When Elmo, Abby Cadabby, Big Bird and friends wish to visit the exciting locations, Sam shares her secret on how they can – it’s as easy as counting “1-2-3 Imagine!” Ernie’s imagination takes him to the high seas to captain the ‘Good Ship Rubber Duckie’, Elmo dances to the rhythm of the African rainforest and Bert meets an octopus who has the blues. It’s a story of adventure and fun that teaches children they can be anyone, do anything and go anywhere with the power of imagination.

We had such a great time seeing those familiar Sesame Street characters singing and dancing on stage.  And sometimes in the aisles!  When one of those furry monsters would come into the audience, the little ones screamed like 13 year old girls at a Justin Bieber concert!

The show is bright and colorful with lots of fun, catchy tunes that encourage everyone to clap, dance and sing along.  And I was so impressed by the characters.  These live Sesame Street characters look just like the ones we watch on TV...only bigger!  They even walk like and have the same physical characteristics as the puppets on TV.  Amazing!

And those actors in the furry costumes must be sweating buckets, but you'd never know it from their performances. They were all so high energy and gave 100%!

My favorite part of the show was the creative use of black lights and fluorescent, glow in the dark sets and costumes.  There is an awesome number under the sea with really cool glow in the dark fish and a blues singing octopus.  So fun!

The whole show is lively and exciting and even though there are NO sad moments I found myself tearing up at times as I watched my son beam with joy as his favorite furry friends came to life.  My husband and I have seen a lot of theatre and as we left the show today we both agreed that despite all of the great theatre we've seen in the past, none of it compared with watching Sesame Street Live with our sweet boy!

If you have a Sesame Street fan in your house, you can not miss 1-2-3 Imagine! with Elmo & Friends

1-2-3 Imagine! with Elmo & Friends is at the Rosemont Theater from today, May 12 until Sunday, May 15.  Ticket prices range from $25 to $50.

*Disclosure: I was given tickets to 1-2-3 Imagine! with Elmo & Friends to facilitate this review, but as always all opinions are my own.
